Brother HL-2170W Laser Printer – Refurbished – GREAT!!! $149.99 |
Why would a 460W laser printer printing and returning to its sleep state make our lights flicker?
We have a Brother HL-5140 laser printer, and the specs say that it draws 460W during printing and 70W during its stand-by sleep mode. Any time we print, any lights on that circuit will blink with a slight brown-out as the printer comes out of sleep mode, a noticeable dim during printing, then another few blinks as it cycles back into sleep mode.
When we refurbished our home office, we ran new wiring from the garage lights to feed a new patch panel closet light and a new outlet dedicated for the laser printer. It’s a 15A circuit, 120V, so I assume that means a total of 1800W of power. If the closet light or garage lights happen to be on and you print, you’ll see the lights flickering.
Why is the wattage causing the lights to flicker? It’s just 60W bulbs, so there should be plenty of watts to spare!
Before this we had an HP Laserjet 4L, which only drew 180W during printing, 5W during sleep (much more power efficient) but it did the same thing (on a different 15A circuit).
Something very similar happens with my Brother HL-1440. When it powers on, the lights dim for a second. I think with the sudden power draw, the circuit it is on takes a noticeable split second to compensate. I’m not sure anything happens when it goes into sleep mode. I do have fluorescent lighting only, and I don’t see any dimming during print, so it could be that incandescents are more susceptible to laser printer derived power fluctuations, but you’d need to spend some time and money testing that.
