What kind of varnish can i use on paper ?
I have a paper on paper collage and i want to seal the edges of the pictures with a varnish that will also harden the paper and make it shiny or matte.
does a product like this even exist?
i don’t want it to smear my pictures which are printed from an inkjet printer
I’m a little confused by your wanting to seal the “edges of the pictures” with something that will also “harden the paper and make it shiny or matte.” Are you wanting to seal only all the edges of each individual picture (perhaps before attaching them to the collage), or are you wanting to harden and perhaps shiny up each whole picutre, or all the pictures after collaging, or what?
If you’ve used regular paper in an inkjet printer though, you can usually make the ink waterproof by starting with a few light coats of spray acrylic sealer (also called artists’ fixative, etc). That fine spray doesn’t usually smear anything, and will eventually create a seal over the ink.
Then you can use a (wet) liquid to make the paper harder and to make it shiny or matte.
The most common thing to use then would be a permanent “white glue,” which is usually thinned down with water before brushing on… Elmers GlueAll is often used. That dries clear if not too thick and will give a slight gloss finish, and multiple coats can be built up for more stiffness if you want (dry between each coat). You could also use a “decoupage medium” like ModPodge/etc which is basically the same thing.
Or you could use other clear sealants like polyurethane, acrylic mediums, clear embossing powders–must melt those, etc. (after sealing with the spray, etc).
Btw, you can create a more satin or matte finish on a dried glossy finish by lightly sanding it with 0000 steel wool.
Or you could just use permanent colorants for your images too–in other words, any machine that uses “toner” instead of ink (photocopier, laser printers), and some of the inks in newer inkjet printers are *permanent* inks. Printing regular inkjet onto “photo” paper should also make the ink waterproof, but not always foolproof.
