How do I recover sound and printer capability to my Windows XP?
I was trying to remove a virus from my computer and in frustration hit the link to restore my computer to an earlier functioning time. Since then, I’ve lost audio and printer capability. To try to restore sound, I went to the Sound and Audio Devices Properties panel, but all the buttons under each tab are faded out and non-functional (exception of the Sounds). 2. When I tried to print, I discovered that no printer was selected. When I clicked “Add printer”, I received an error message “Print spooler service not working”. How do I restore these functions? I’m working on Windows XP Home Edition. Thanks!
You should be able the next day to go back and restore it to the time before you restored it the first time,if that doesnt work the only option is,one,for the sound go to Start,right click My Computer,click Manage,then click Device Manager,then on the right click on the + sign next to Sound,Video and Game Controllers and right click all,one by one that is listed for the sound and click uninstall,close out all the boxes and then restart and see if windows will re-recognize the devices and reinstall the drivers for them,that might get your sound back.now for the printer apparently you set restore back to a time right before you installed the printer,thats why you r getting the Print Spooler service not working.the only thing i can do for that is have you go into add and remove and see if anyting about the printer is still there if so remove it,unplug your printer’s usb cable,then restartand reinstall the sofware for the printer according to the users manual.if you dont have that email me the name and model number of the printer and i can try locate it for you.ok after you get the printer reinstall and the print spooler still isnt working,you will have to go to Start,Control Panel,Performance and Maintenance,Administrative Tools,double click Services,scroll the list on the right till you see Print Spooler and see if it is disabled or on manual,if it is on either right click Print Spooler,then click Properties,where you see Startup Type click on the down arrow and change it to automatic,then right under that at Service Status click on start if start isnt greyed out.Make sure the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service is started too and set to automatic.see if all of this helps you to get them back.need more help email me.
