How can I keep my puppy from being so afraid of everything?
When she was really little (she is 6 months now), she would just run away and retreat when she was scared. But now, she barks uncontrollably.
For example, this morning (okay, afternoon) I was awoken by her freaking out because there was a garbage truck outside making noise.
It’s just become very annoying, and I want to help her not be so afraid. She is also afraid of: vacuum cleaners, printers, showers, and basically anything else that makes noise.
You will need a partner for this. Get Puppy involved in something she is good at and really loves. Go to a part of the house far from the source of noise, but still within hearing. Get her really involved in the activity, including plenty of treats, and at some secret signal (I say the name of any color) your partner starts the noise. You stay close to Puppy and keep her from running off, try to continue the activity. After 2-3 seconds, your partner ends the noise and you pet and praise Puppy until she is ready to resume with the game and the treats. Repeat. And repeat. And repeat until you are just so darn sick of it, but you have to patient in teaching dogs.
When Puppy is finally able to tolerate 2-3 seconds of noise without going kookoo, start gradually increasing the duration. You goal is to get the Puppy brain (oxymoron?) working like this. “I hate loud noises, but everything I hear one the most wonderful things happen!”
The reason we use a changable secret signal is so that Puppy won’t get conditioned to expecting noise everytime someone says ‘now’ or ‘go’.
