Solid Ink for a Xerox Printer.?
We use a Xerox 8550 and it uses solid ink (sort of like crayons). There are aftermarket providers of the ink at about half the Xerox price. Xerox claims the aftermarket products will hurt the machine and maybe even invalidate the warranty. Does anyone know the straight story on this stuff?
As with most aftermarket inks, you take a chance on the quality of those aftermarket inks as opposed to the printer manufacturers brand. They may not be blended with the right, or proper amount of, ingredients, or may not have the correct melting temperatures, ink stabilizers, may not mix well with your current ink, may have impurities, may have slight color differences that could affect your output colors if they are critical, etc… You could try them and see what happens, but if it does cause problems, and Xerox finds out, then you’re out of luck with any warranty repairs and may have to pay quite a bit of money for the repairs, so it may not be worth the risk — it’s up to you. Never have seen any of my customers use anything other than the Xerox brand of ink blocks so I can’t say how the aftermarkets would work. As with most aftermarket ink suppliers, there are good ones and not so good ones.
Many people use aftermarket inks without too many problems, but with solid inks I have not had much experience.
